A Year in Pictures 10

Day 10 - 04/10/2010

Cafe

This place is on my walk to and from the station and every day for over a year now it has made me smile. I love the bold text of the signage, the clear colours, the simplicity with which it lets you know what they sell and, most importantly, the fact that it very clearly shows where it is. American readers will (probably) not know this, but in the UK there is a divide between those who talk about "Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner" and those who talk about "Breakfast, Dinner and Tea". To put it simply, the first is said by soft southerners, and the latter is very much a northern thing. I've heard (and read) countless stories of people being confused when invited to tea or dinner, particuarly at uni which is normally the first time people get exposed to the "other" way of thinking. Personally its never really affected me, as I have a southerner for a Dad and a Welsh mum, which results in dinner and tea being interchangable on a regular basis.

But to get back on point, the very first time I saw this sign it made me smile. Here, almost more than anything else I've come across in Birmingham is something that says "Southern? SOUTHERN? We're the Midlands thank you very much, and don't you forget it!"
